Being a disciple of Jesus is simply having a growing relationship with him and walking with Jesus through your every day life. The Bible teaches us some habits that help our communication, understanding and walk with Jesus continually grow.
Here are 4 hugely effective habits of discipleship:
- Five Minutes
Spending five minutes of quiet time with Jesus each day is a powerful habit. How often do you have any quiet time in your busy life? This is a great time to be still and listen to God’s voice, talk with him, look around and see where He is already active and all He is doing in the world around you.Psalm 46:10 “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” - Daily Time in The Word
Get a Bible and open it up and spend some time each day reading God’s Word. Start by doing this for 5 minutes. Start with one of the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke or John. As you read, ask these questions: What strikes me or jumps out at me in what I am reading? What makes me comfortable or uncomfortable in what I am reading? What don’t I understand? (and who can I ask about this to help me understand) and How would my life be different if I applied and lived out what I read? Start with 5 minutes in God’s Word and grow from there and see how this habit effects your life.Matthew 4:4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. - Daily Time in Prayer
Prayer is simply communicating with God. It is a two way conversation. Speaking with God and also listening to Him. Spend some time each day growing your relationship with Jesus by speaking to Him and seeking to hear His voice.1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.John 10:27-28 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. - Being a Disciple and a Discipler
Other believers are huge gifts from God for you. They can build you up, encourage you, teach you and hold you accountable. They can help you become more of the man or woman God has already created you to be. They can help you understand and apply God’s Word to your every day real life situations. It is great for every believer in Jesus to be a disciple that has is someone intentionally pouring into them and discipling them on their Christian journey. It is also great for every believer to be a discipler that is intentionally guiding and pouring into someone else who needs this as well.1 Corinthians 11:1 Follow my example as I follow the example of Christ.Phillipians 4:9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practiceProverbs 27:17 As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.
